Head Coach, Renee Ross

Renee Ross has coached for 24 years at five high schools (Hoover, Valhalla, Rancho Buena Vista, Monte Vista, and Christian). She is currently a Physical Education teacher at Granite Hills High School. Ross has taught for 16 years at 3 different high schools (Rancho Buena Vista, Monte Vista and Granite Hills) and has a B.A. degree in Physical Education and Master's Degree in Education

Ross attended Riverside Poly High School where she competed in track and field for 4 years and cross country for 2 years. She competed in just about every event and held 5 track records, which 2 are still currently there after 30 years.

Ross also attended SDSU and competed in the sprints and mid-distance including the 1500 meters. She held the 400 meter record for 20 years until it was broken a year ago and still holds the 800 meter record. Ross was on the all-time top 10 list in about 10 events and a 3 time All-American. In 1985 she missed the world 500 meter indoor mark by a mere second. Ross competed in the 1984, 1988 and 1996 Olympic Trials in the 400 and 800 meters.

In 2008 Christian High Girls Track Team received the CIF SD section All Academic Team Award with the Highest Team GPA. In 2006 Ross coached the athlete that was voted CIF Female Athlete of the Year. During Ross's 4 years at Christian High they were Central League Champions 2006 and 2007; During her years at RBV they were Palomar League Champions 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999; Grossmont South League Champs 1991, 1992, 2000, 2001, 2002. Ross coached many athletes that qualified each year for the CIF Finals and State Meet.

Ross was voted Grossmont District Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1991 and Palomar League Coach of the Year in 1995 as well as CIF Coach of the Year in 1996.

Ross was born and raised in Riverside, CA. She has a wonderful husband named Mike of 24 years and 3 children which she is blessed to have; Mandy who competed in Track, Soccer and Volleyball and was an honor student at Christian High School (CHS) for 4 years and is a Freshman at Azusa Pacific University on a track scholarship and already holds the 60 meter record there, Danielle who is a 3 sport athlete, honor student and a Sophomore at CHS was chosen to be on the ODP (Olympic Development Program) for soccer, and Sean who is a 3rd grader loves playing soccer and baseball.

Distance, Thom Hunt

Thom Hunt is in his fifth year coaching the distance runners at San Diego Mesa College. Under his guidance, Mesa athletes have won four individual state championships and have had a total of eleven all-state performers in the past three years. Mesa athletes have also won twelve Pacific Coast Athletic Conference titles from 2007-2009. Hunt was also coach of the United States Junior Men at the World Cross Country Championships held in Edinbrough, Scotland in 2008.

In addition to coaching, Hunt is the secretary of the Cross Country Executive Council of USATF. Locally, he serves as the mens long distance running chair for the San Diego-Imperial Association of USATF. Coach Hunt is a Level 1 USATF certified coach.

Before coaching, Hunt had a successful international running career that spanned 17 years. In high school, Hunt set the national record in the indoor mile with a time of 4:02.7. As a freshman at the University of Arizona, he won the Junior International Cross Country title. He was also a seven-time NCAA All-American. During his post collegiate career, Hunt competed in four US Olympic Trials and set an American Record in the 10k on the roads with a 28:12 in 1981.

Coach Hunt is married to Caroline Marshall and they have three children; Marshall, Claire, and Chloe. He also plays drums for The Jackals, a no-frills rock n roll band.

Throws, Jarred Rome

Jarred Rome brings a wealth of competitive experience to San Diego Mesa college as one of the United State’s top discus throwers, ranking in the US top three since 2002 and in the world top ten since 2004. He was a 6 time NCAA All American while getting his degree in business administration at Boise State University. Rome has competed in three world championships (2005, 2007, 2009) and was a member of the 2004 Olympic Team. Born in Seattle, Washington he now resides in Chula Vista.

Hurdles, Bashir Ramzy

Bashir Ramzy is entering his first year of coaching at San Diego Mesa College. Ramzy will be coaching the hurdle events. A 2009 Hall of Fame inductee at his alma mater, Texas A&M University, Bashir was a two-time Big 12 Athlete of the Year in 2000 and 2001. One of Ramzys strengths is his versatility demonstrated by his being a five-time NCAA All-American in the 110m hurdles, long jump, triple jump and 4 x 400 relay. He was a multiple Big 12 Champion in the 110m hurdles, triple jump as well as in the sprint relay. After his collegiate career Ramzy has been as outstanding national level competitor including winning two medals in the Pan American games (Bronze in the long jump and 4 x 400m Silver) as well as being a finalist in the 110m Hurdles. Ramzy hails from Dallas, TX where he competed for Lake Highlands High School.

Jumps, Marcus Carroll

Marcus Carroll enters his first year as San Diego Mesa College Jumps Coach followed by a flourishing decade of combined experience as track and field student-athlete and as coach. Personal achievements include becoming a NCAA national qualifier in the long jump and triple jump, All-CCAA conference honoree in the long jump, triple jump, 100m, and 4x100m and 4x400m relay, and High School State Champion in the 4x100m relay; however, earning the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award in 2008 (an annual award that recognizes the CCAA top male and female student-athlete who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in their sport) is by far his greatest accomplishment.

Carroll competed collegiately at the California State University of Los Angeles and received his B.A degree in Communication with an emphasis in Interpersonal Communication/ Language and Social Interaction.

Before coaching at San Diego Mesa College, Carroll has served a combination of 2 years as Jumps, Sprints, and Hurdles Coach at the high school level where he worked closely with student-athletes establishing season goals and strategies for achieving those goals.

Carroll was born, raised and currently resides in his home town of San Diego. He attended Helix Charter High School and from as long as he can remember, he has enjoyed reading, watching, and performing various types of athletic activity.

Jumps, Karoline Koehler

Karoline Koehler has competed in the world of track and field from 1994 to the present. In 2003, she graduated from Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium, an elite sports high school in Erfurt, Germany. As an enlisted soldier in the sports company of the Federal Armed Forces, Karoline was awarded the Level One Coaching Certificate.

As a junior, she competed in European and World Championships. Earning a scholarship to San Diego State University, Karoline has made a name to herself as an NCAA Division I collegiate athlete. She has earned twice the Mountain West Conference High Point Award, MWC student-athlete of the year 2009, 4-time NCAA All-American, NCAA runner-up in the long jump 2009, NCAA West Regional champion in the triple jump and runner-up in the long jump 2009, and has broken 4 school records. She has also earned 2-time NCAA Academic All-American.

Karoline was born in Soemmerda, Germany. Currently, she is an International Economics and Psychology student-athlete at San Diego State University, where she is pursuing her BA degree.
