San Diego Promise
Incoming Promise Students

This information is for students who are interested in enrolling in the San Diego Promise program for Fall 2023.

Students who completed the San Diego Promise application before August 14 with outstanding issues (financial aid application, residency, high school status, etc.) may still resolve their issues and then be enrolled in the Promise program. The Promise Contract is sent to students only after application issues have been resolved and eligibility has been verified. If you applied to enrolled in the Promise program for Fall 2023 and need an update on your application status, please email your full name, student ID number, and inquiry to [email protected].

Reminder: Register in at least 12 units

Register in a minimum of 12 units by the Add/Drop Deadline of the primary session term. For Fall 2023, the deadline is September 1, 2023. [The first day of Fall semester is August 21, 2023. After this date, students need persmission numbers from professors to add additional courses.]

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know if My promise application was received?

You should have instantly received an automatic confirmation email upon submitted your Promise application. Information regarding the Promise contract will be provided to students on a rolling basis after April 1, 2023. We recommend applicants regularly check for status updates and notifications on Jira (the website where you applied to Promise). Here is how:

    1. Create an account on Jira.
    2. Log into Jira.
    3. Click "Requests" at the top right.
    4. Click "Status: Open Requests" and uncheck "Open Requests" to view everything.
    5. There, you can view the status of the application.
    6. To check for notifications or comments, click on the request and scroll down.

If you have further questions regarding your application, please email your full name, student ID number, and inquiry to [email protected] from your email address on file.

Is the San Diego Promise a need-based program?

No. All students who meet the eligibility requirements and complete the steps to enroll by the deadline will be admitted. There is no income requirement to participate in the San Diego Promise program.

What does the San Diego Promise program provide?

The San Diego Promise covers enrollment fees and the student health fee during Fall and Spring semesters for up to two years. If a student enrolls in the Promise program and receives CCPG in their financial aid award to cover enrollment fees, they will receive a book grant instead.

What is the CCPG (CALIFORNIA COLLEGE PROMISE GRANT)?

The San Diego Promise and the CPG are two separate sources of funding. San Diego Promise (referred to often as "Promise Program") is not a financial aid program. The California College Promise Grant, CCPG, (formerly BOGW, or Board Of Governors Waiver) is a source of funding based on financial need and information submitted in the FAFSA or CADAA. Questions regarding CCPG should be directed to the Financial Aid office. Students who are CCPG-eligible receive a book grant from the Promise program since their enrollment fees are already covered.

Does the San Diego Promise program pay for textbooks?

Students who are CCPG-eligible receive a book grant from the Promise program. The Promise program provides enrollment fees OR a book grant to each Promise student, not both.

What if I cannot enroll in 12 units during Fall or Spring semester?

Students with a DSPS Waiver of Full-Time Status Requirement form may submit their DSPS Waiver online through Jira and remain eligible while enrolled in less than 12 units. Students with extenuating circumstances who are unable to enroll in 12 units may submit an appeal for Reduced Unit Load. Appeals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the District Promise office. For instructions on submitting these appeals, visit the Promise Canvas shell at http://bit.ly/promisecanvasMake sure you click "Join this Course" at the top right.

Can I take Summer college courses after high school graduation?

Summer courses outside of SDCCD (Mesa, City, or Miramar College) will disqualify incoming students from the program. Students may take summer courses within SDCCD and remain eligible.

Are Summer courses covered by the San Diego Promise program?

Summer courses are not typically covered by the Promise program so students must pay out of pocket (if no other financial aid is received). The only exception is if a student is enrolled in 12 units during the Summer (which is uncommon, as Summer is an accelerated term with a heavy workload). Students with a DSPS Waiver of Full-Time Status Requirement may also have Summer enrollment and student health fees covered by the Promise program. This applies to courses taken during the Summer before Year 1 and before Year 2 in the Promise program. For Promise students who also receive financial aid, we recommend speaking with the Financial Aid office to see if summer courses are covered. Promise book grants are not available for the Summer term.
